On January 12th, 2016, Microsoft will cease support for its older web browsers Internet Explorer 7 and IE8. Microsoft will also reduce support levels on IE9, IE10 and IE11. In a nutshell, no further updates will be made on any of the older IE products. With so many different versions of Internet Explorer in use, on so many different versions of Windows, it became impossible for Microsoft to support so many versions. Although some browsers will continue to work, they won’t be supported or updated by Microsoft.
Should you upgrade your IE browser?
Microsoft encourages all Internet Explorer users to upgrade to the latest browsers for a faster, more secure browsing experience. What does this mean for you?
- Improved security – Older browsers up to IE8 do not support the latest security and data encryption protocols, things like TSL 1.2. What does that mean? That means your data could be compromised. Internet Explorer 11 includes features like Enhanced Protected Mode to help keep user data safer. Staying diligent in maintaining and updating software remains the single most important factor in Internet security.
- Frequent updates – Using unsupported software is the same thing as driving your car without insurance. If something goes wrong, it can cause you a world of pain. Eventually, unsupported software becomes a security, support and business risk. Updates introduce patches, security updates and bug fixes that keep your data secure and safe.
- Productivity – Web browsers dictate the way certain features in Maintenance Assistant CMMS operate. Older browsers such as IE6/7/8 and early versions of Firefox and Chrome do not support modern web standards and have been known to cause issues such as windows not appearing correctly, buttons being badly positioned on the screen and pages not saving. It’s like trying to play a Blu-ray DVD on your old VHS player. If you use an old browser, the websites and the web applications you use will be affected – and not in a good way.
- Unlock the future – Maintenance Assistant continues to invest in supporting more recent technologies so that we can continue to deliver great new user experiences. Upgrading to the latest browsers will unlock new features and improvements that you didn’t know existed.
With the world becoming more and more dependent on the Internet and cloud maintenance software like Maintenance Assistant CMMS, running the latest browsers is more important than ever for speed, ease of use, upgrade support and the overall best browsing experience. Maintenance Assistant recommends using modern, web browsers like Safari, Firefox or Chrome. These applications are all free, well maintained and designed to remain at the forefront of web development.
As we’ve mentioned previously in numerous blogs and newsletters, Maintenance Assistant takes online security very seriously and we go above and beyond to protect your data. We recommend Maintenance Assistant customers do everything they personally can to protect their data as well. This includes using up-to-date web browsers. Take a few minutes today and upgrade your favorite web browser to the latest and greatest version.
